A HEDONIC MODEL OF RICE TRAITS: ECONOMIC VALUES FROM FARMERS IN WEST AFRICA AgEcon

New crop varieties often have been promoted in developing countries based upon superior yield vis-a-vis locally available varieties. This research presents a hedonic model for upland rice by drawing upon the input characteristics and consumer good characteristics model literature. Model specification tests determine that a combination of production and consumption characteristics best explains the willingness to pay for new upland rice varieties. This non-separable household model specification determined that four traits explain the willingness to pay for new rice varieties: plant cycle length, plant height, grain elongation/swelling and tenderness. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an autogamous species that shows natural crossing rates of up to 3%, where the variations are influenced by genotypes and environments. The present work aimed to evaluate the rates and distances of natural crossing between the upland rice cultivars Guarani and IAC 201. The study was done in the counties of Carpina and Recife, in the State of Pernambuco during the agricultural years of 2001 and 2002, respectively. The Guarani cultivar presents leaf pilosity conditioned by the dominant alleles HLHL and this character was used as a morphologic tracer. Visando minimizar o problema do uso de cultivares inadequadas pelos produtores, para que os materiais selecionados adaptem-se ao cultivo em sequeiro no modelo de exploração de roça e no modelo mais moderno, ou seja, utilizando-se as áreas de capoeira com uso de adubos e outros insumos, a EMBRAPA-Amapá (Centro de Pesquisa Agroflorestal do Amapá) vem executando um subprojeto de avaliação de linhagens e cultivares de arroz para cultivo em áreas de mata de terra firme no estado.

Crop models are ideally suited to quantify existing climatic risks. However, they require historic climate data as input. While daily temperature and rainfall data are often available, the lack of observed solar radiation (Rs) data severely limits site-specific crop modelling. The objective of this study was to estimate Rs based on air temperature solar radiation models and to quantify the propagation of errors in simulated radiation on several APSIM/ORYZA crop model seasonal outputs, yield, biomass, leaf area (LAI) and total accumulated solar radiation (SRA) during the crop cycle. Upland rice occupied 47 percent of rice production area of the northern Thailand. Production of upland rice is facing with drought particularly in early stage of growth. This study was aimed at evaluation of indigenous upland rice for early drought resistance. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse. One hundred and eighty seven upland rice varieties including ULR 135 (resistant check) were grown in plastic pots. Randomized complete block design with 2 replications was laid out. Seeds were sown in pots under greenhouse condition. Two seedling were let to grow in each pot. Early drought was performed at 28 days after planting (DAP) for 17 days. This research aimed to access farmer participatory breeding in selecting the local upland rice varieties for desirable agronomic traits, good cooking and eating grain characteristics. The research carried out in the land reform area of amphoes Mueang, Lamae, Thung Tako in Chumphon province. The experiment comprised 12 upland rice varieties, 11 experimental lines and 1 standard check, by using the Randomized Complete Block design with 4 replications. Silk protein solution was sprayed on upland paddy fields of 23 farmers at Phufa Pattana Centre in Nan province to study its potential to increase the yield of rice. Untreated areas were included in each field for comparison. การสำรวจและจำแนกพื้นที่ปลูกข้าวไร่และข้าวนาที่สูง เพื่อบ่งชี้สภาวะวิกฤติจากสภาพดินกรด Thai Agricultural

Survey and classification of highland rice cultivation areas to indicate acid soil crisis was conducted on altitude 700 meters above sea level. Soil sampling was conducted form 7 districts of Mae Hong Son province are namely Muang, Khun Yuam, Mae La Noi, Mae Sariang, Sop Muey, Pai and Pang Ma Pha in the year 2012-2013. A total of 115 soil samples were consisting of 68 paddies and 47 upland conditions. Soil samples were analysis to find out the soil pH. The result showed that the strongly acid, moderately acid and slightly acid are 39.13, 21.74 and 20.86 percentages, respectively.
